The Home Repair and Accessibility Program helps low-income Nova Scotians with the cost of home repairs. The program also provides funding for accessibility upgrades to help people with disabilities and seniors stay in their homes. You can apply anytime.

The Canada-Nova Scotia Targeted Housing Benefit helps renters with the cost of their rent if they pay more than 40% of their pre-tax (gross) household income on the average market rent in their area (not the rent that they pay), or, helps homeowners stay in their home if they pay more than 50% of their pre-tax (gross) household income on housing costs (like mortgage and utilities). Supplements are up to $200 per month. You can apply any time.

Property Tax Rebate for Seniors helps low-income seniors with the cost of municipal residential property taxes. Rebates are 50% of what you paid on last year’s property taxes, up to a maximum of $800. You can apply until 31 December 2024.

The Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency maintains, manages and operates public housing for low-income Nova Scotians.

YMCA Senior Snow Removal is a YMCA program – in partnership with the city of Halifax – for seniors, and persons with disabilities which provides a subsidized snow removal service to create safe access.

HomeWarming offers no-charge energy assessments and free home upgrades to eligible Nova Scotians.

The Seniors Association of St. Margaret’s Bay (Bay Seniors) host a Local Home Maintenance Directory on their website. This can be a great resource for seniors looking for local businesses.
Home Care & Respite

Home Care is available to all Nova Scotians who need help with care in their homes and communities. This service is offered through the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA).

Other programs

Access-A-Bus is a shared ride, door-to-door, transit service for persons who are unable to use the conventional transit system due to physical or cognitive disabilities. Access-A-Bus is available to provide transportation to medical appointments and to allow you to participate in social, personal, and recreational activities.

Through the Affordable Access Program qualified residents can receive discounted monthly transit passes, access to Halifax Recreation programs, and participate in the Property Tax Exemption and Deferral program.
